かわ⁴, がわ【側】

1 〔方面〕 a direction; 〔相対する二つの一方〕 a side.

●公園の北側 the north side of a park

・北海道の太平洋側 the Pacific side of Hokkaidō

・わたしの右側 my right (hand) side.

●女性の側から見て from a woman's point of view.

●香織さんの左側にすわる[立つ] sit [stand] on Kaori's left (hand side)

・通りの向こう側に across [on the other side of, the opposite side of] the street

・両側に on both sides; on either [each] side. [⇒りょうがわ]

・ここからだと富士山は北側に見える. From where we are Mt. Fuji can be seen to the north.

・川のこちら[向こう]側に花屋がある. There is a florist's on this [the other] side of the river.

・お客様の側に立って営業時間を延長しました. For the convenience of our customers, we have extended our opening hours.

・息子は母親の側についた. The son took his mother's side [sided with his mother, took sides with his mother] 《against his father》.

●西側の部屋 a room on the west (side)

・経営者側の意向 the intention of the managerial side; the management's intention

・日本海側の地域は太平洋沿岸地域に比べて雨や雪が多い. The Japan Sea side has more rain and snow than the areas facing the Pacific.

●日米会談で日本側は基地問題に言及した. At the Japan-US talks, the Japanese side raised the matter of military bases.

2 〔取り囲むもの〕 a container; (覆い) a covering; a wrapping; (時計の) a case.

●金側の時計 a watch in [with] a gold case.

●ふとんの側をはずす take off the cover of a futon.

●彼からのプレゼントはいつも側はりっぱだが中身は貧弱だ. Gifts from him are always impressively wrapped, but the contents are nothing much.
